Specialty Packing Operations at TPCI

Plunger packing plays an integral role in sealing pumps and maintaining adequate downstream pressure — a critical condition for applications such as water hauling or water transfer pumps. In plunger pumps or pumps with extension rods, the packing is held stationary inside a stuffing box; in piston-style pumps, the packing sits in a groove.

At Triangle Pump Components Inc. (TPCI), we offer specialty in-house packing solutions specially designed for specific environments. Depending on the application, we can create different types of seals to reinforce the packing, fill voids, and extend the service life of the plunger.

Our specialty packing styles and materials include:

Reciprocal Pumps in the Oil Gas Industry

0838

  • Material: Medium-hard, black nitrile (NBR) with synthetic fabric around a rigid phenolic core; three sets of pressure rings, each with a top and bottom adapter for an effective seal
  • Compatibility: General-service packing used in all types of industries; resistant to hydrocarbons, water, mild acids, temperatures up to 180°F for metal plungers and 150°F for ceramic plungers, pressures up to 2,500 psi
  • Note: For really hot water or greater acid resistance, upgrade to 0858 super gold packing, which is able to withstand temperatures up to 300°F and pressures up to 5,000 psi

0842

  • Material: Soft, black nitrile (NBR) with synthetic fabric and homogenous ID lip around rigid phenolic core, used for power end packing; three sets of pressure rings, each with a top and bottom adapter for an effective seal
  • Compatibility: Hydrocarbons, water, mild acids, temperatures up to 180°F for metal plungers and 150°F for ceramic plungers, pressures up to 1,500 psi

0701

  • Material: Medium-hard, black nitrile (NBR) with cotton fabric, used mostly for chevron power end packing
  • Compatibility: Hydrocarbons, temperatures up to 250°F, pressures up to 3,500 psi

0805/0815

  • Material: Low-friction, medium-hard, gray nitrile (NBR) with cotton/synthetic fabric, used for V-ring or chevron-style packing; spring-loaded to create a low-friction stuffing box seal
  • Compatibility: Hydrocarbons, temperatures up to 250°F, pressures up to 10,000 psi

6618

  • Material: Spring-loaded, hard, black FEPM with aramid (Kevlar)/glass blend, often used in chemical and food/beverage applications
  • Compatibility: Hydrocarbons, H2S, acids, temperatures up to 450°F, pressures up to 15,000 psi

1067/1068

  • Material: Hard, black nitrile (NBR) with cotton/synthetic fabric; header-style packing often used in well-service applications such as cement pumping trucks and frack pumps
  • Compatibility: Hydrocarbons, acids, abrasive fluids, temperatures up to 250°F, pressures up to 15,000 psi

0212

  • Material: Aramid IT fibers (Kevlar) impregnated with high-temperature lubricants to help lubricate the box
  • Compatibility: Mild chemicals and caustics, hydrocarbons, aromatic and aliphatic solvents, salt solutions, slurries, and abrasive services, extreme temperatures (-320 to 500°F), pressures up to 5,000 psi

0217

  • Material: Adjustable compression-style packing with aramid fibers (Kevlar) in corners and PTFE seams, allowing it to hold up better in the box; more durable than 0838
  • Compatibility: Hydrocarbons, acids, water, extreme temperatures (-320 to 500°F), pressures up to 4,000 psi

0237

  • Material: Compression-style packing often paired with adjustable packing to tighten up worn out stuffing boxes
  • Compatibility: General-service packing for ceramic plungers; resistant to hydrocarbons, water, mild acids, temperatures up to 150°F, pressures up to 2,500 psi
